A few miles from Luteritz is the abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop. In 1908 Zacharias Lewala found a diamond while working in the desert. When news of the find leaked out, people flocked to the area and Kolmanskop was born. The diamonds played out and the town was abandoned in 1954.
